Our camera Olympus PEN E P1 - retro design from 1959

All photo art included in the digital exhibition PATTERN LANDSCAPE are photographed by Helena with the camera Olympus Pen E P1. A camper that has a retro design based on the Olympus Pen series of compact cameras from 1959.

A camera story

When this camera came on the market in 2009, it was well received by photo enthusiasts but was not a real success with the masses as it was a bit heavy and a bit too complicated. A few years later, they came out with EPL1, which was cheaper and easier to use.

PEN E P1 was one of the first digital system cameras to hit the market with Micro Four Third systems. A standard system that Olympus released together with Panasonic in 2008. And very similar to the Olympus Pen F. The system brought a relatively compact system camera that could have most types of lenses.

Whether the PEN series got its name from the legendary American photographer Irving Penn is unclear, but what is clear is that he used an Olympus PEN F when he photographed. He was best known for his fashion photographs, portraits and still lifes. He photographed for the major fashion magazines and brands such as Vouge, Clinique and others. If you want to read more about his life as a photographer, you can go into The Irving Penn Foundation. But what we really recommend is to go to an Instagram account @ the.irving.penn.foundation

The camera is for the photographer what the brush is for a painter?

Just as the brush, pen or scraper is an extension of the hand and sight of a painter or illustrator, so the camera is something of the extension of sight and hand for a photographer. The tools, materials and vision are something that becomes very personal in the artistic process for each creative person. And if you feel that you are a little too at home and safe with your tool or material and feel that you are not moving forward in your creation, a tip can be to change tools or materials and then you may suddenly see something else. For the sight, we can not replace, says Helena.

Feel free to sign up for our digital vernissage which is broadcast live via Facebook, on March 31 we will talk more about our camera and also show posters from the PATTERN LANDSCAPE series. All pictures are taken with the camera in the picture and they in turn become beautiful pattern landscapes.
