We asked the question regarding the difference between a print / poster and Fine Art print to our supplier Frontline. The simplest answer is for a production of prints is quantity for prints / posters and quality for Fine Art prints. Simpler paper and color are used for prints / posters and with a Fine Art prints, higher demands are placed on the paper to have good quality and the color is durable, the right color reproduction and archive-resistant. But as the printers get better, the differences between the different prints will diminish in the long run.
Fine Art print is also called Giclée. Giclee is most often used in the art world for art reproductions made with inkjet printers, which in practice is the same as Fine Art print. The printer's properties and color pigments together with the paper quality determine whether the print can be considered approved for signing according to the Giclée fine art principle.
ISO 9706 defines paper with properties that make it permanent and is the standard to be called Fine Art.
- The paper should have a pH value between 7.5 and 10.0.
- The paper must have an alkali reserve of at least the equivalent of 0.4 moles of acid per kg of paper
- The paper must have a tear resistance of at least 350 mN
- The paper must have a Kappa number of less than 5, which means that the paper may only contain small amounts of easily oxidized materials such as lignin.
An ISO standard is also available for the ink, but we will not go into it here.
That is why the price of a Fine Art print is significantly higher compared to a regular print. Frontline, which delivers our prints, wants to maintain a high quality and the print in our prints has a nice color reproduction and the paper is an affordable quality paper. The paper they use is called Optima Production Satin 190g and is a PE-coated photo paper for daily high and fast production of photo prints, posters etc.

Problems with safe style and trend lists etc. as we see it, is that they can be a bit inhibiting and create uncertainty about the inherent creativity that is there, so we suggest trying to reverse the process. Start with yourself!
